Today the selection of a cell phone is not an easy job. There are varieties of cell phones which have flooded the market with various features, striking colours and impressive technologies. Along with this, cell phone batteries are one of the key features one needs to consider while choosing a particular cell phone.

It is very hard if the cell phone goes off during an important call and if there is no charger available nearby to recharge the battery. These situations may at times be so severe that they can ruin the business, important deals or some personal relationships. So battery of a cell phone needs to be given utmost important while selecting the cell phone.

There are three types of cell phone batteries available in market which has evolved along with time and need of the customers. They are:

Nickel cadmium (NiCd)
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)
Lithium-ion (Li-Ion)
NiCd batteries: Many cell phones use slim NiCd batteries which operate in 500 – 650 mAh (milli ampere hrs). These batteries generally loose 1% charge each day even when not in use.

NiMH batteries: These batteries are slightly expensive batteries than NiCd batteries, but are replacing NiCd batteries rapidly. The reason behind this is that these batteries have more than double life when compared to NiCd batteries. These batteries run for 700- 900 cycles of charging and discharging compared to 200- 400 cycles of NiCd batteries. Also these batteries can be charged more than 60% in just15 minutes.

Li-Ion batteries: These batteries have made their way in many new cell phones that we see in the market today. Though these batteries are expensive than the above mentioned batteries, these batteries offer more than 250 Hrs of standby time apart from 5 Hrs of talk time.
Cell phone battery life drastically reduces if they are not used properly.

There are three main reasons which reduce battery life. They are:

1) Rough handling of batteries,

2) Use of cell phones in extreme temperature conditions

3) Unnecessary charge of batteries.

Though cell phone batteries are made robust enough, rough handling like dropping of batteries make a permanent damage to the batteries. Use of cell phones in extreme condition is another factor which hampers the life of a battery. If cell phones are kept under direct sun rays for prolonged period like putting them on car dash board while driving, it damages the battery. Another important damage to cell phone batteries is because of the basic human tendency of charging the battery for a prolonged period even though the batteries are fully charged.

Life of a cell phone battery depends on the charging and discharging cycles. Once you completely charge the battery and keep the charging on, the battery starts discharging to a particular level and then again starts charging. The more the cell phone battery is put on charge the more will be the cycles of charging and discharging. This will reduce the life of the cell phone battery to a great extent.

So to maximise the life of the cell phone batteries one need to avoid rough handling, extreme conditions and unnecessary charge of battery.
