Cell phone is the common need in today’s world for everyone. It becomes an essential part of life rather than a luxury. Communication has become very easy because of the cell phones. People can stay in touch or communicate at any time no matter where they are located. There are mainly two types of services available in cell phones as prepaid services and post paid services.

First prepaid cell phone service was provided and patented in 1993. Afterwards, much iteration happened in the concept and even today many new ideas are being generated to sell these services.

Prepaid cell phones are the mobile phones where service is acquired in advance. In this type of service, one purchases the credit of a particular amount in advance and can use the cell phone network till the credit lasts. Once the credit limit is over, user needs to purchase more credit by purchasing “Top up” cards. These cards are available easily anywhere in retail shops. User can use his credit or debit cards to purchase these top up cards.

Top up cards are given a unique code which is always located underneath the scratch-off. User need to scratch the card gently to get the unique code and then feed the same in the mobile to recharge the phone with the specific amount. Generally these top up card comes up with a validity period of say 30 days or 90 days etc. The validity period depends on the amount of top up card as well as the scheme under which the user is purchasing the card. After the validity period is over with a particular top up card, the remaining balance from the card get lapsed and can’t be use any more.

Prepaid cell phones cost low for low usage of phones. If the use of cell phones is limited, then the prepaid service is the best option to keep the expenses less. It is very easy and convenient to keep control on your expenditure. If one decides to control the spending on cell phones to particular amount, then he can purchase the credit in advance for the same amount and can spend it in decided time period.

Also many service provider gives the amount spends after each call and the total credit remaining in the cell phones. It helps user to restrict the call time and know the exact situation about the money left for use. At any point of time, user can call particular number to check the available credit, its expiry date for free of cost. There is no termination fee associate if one discards the use of the prepaid cell phone as the service was paid in advance. It gives freedom to user to switch between the service providers, cell phones at any point of time.

Prepaid cell phone usage is has gone up substantially giving a lot of value to money.

Today the selection of a cell phone is not an easy job. There are varieties of cell phones which have flooded the market with various features, striking colours and impressive technologies. Along with this, cell phone batteries are one of the key features one needs to consider while choosing a particular cell phone.

It is very hard if the cell phone goes off during an important call and if there is no charger available nearby to recharge the battery. These situations may at times be so severe that they can ruin the business, important deals or some personal relationships. So battery of a cell phone needs to be given utmost important while selecting the cell phone.

There are three types of cell phone batteries available in market which has evolved along with time and need of the customers. They are:

Nickel cadmium (NiCd)
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)
Lithium-ion (Li-Ion)
NiCd batteries: Many cell phones use slim NiCd batteries which operate in 500 – 650 mAh (milli ampere hrs). These batteries generally loose 1% charge each day even when not in use.

NiMH batteries: These batteries are slightly expensive batteries than NiCd batteries, but are replacing NiCd batteries rapidly. The reason behind this is that these batteries have more than double life when compared to NiCd batteries. These batteries run for 700- 900 cycles of charging and discharging compared to 200- 400 cycles of NiCd batteries. Also these batteries can be charged more than 60% in just15 minutes.

Li-Ion batteries: These batteries have made their way in many new cell phones that we see in the market today. Though these batteries are expensive than the above mentioned batteries, these batteries offer more than 250 Hrs of standby time apart from 5 Hrs of talk time.
Cell phone battery life drastically reduces if they are not used properly.

There are three main reasons which reduce battery life. They are:

1) Rough handling of batteries,

2) Use of cell phones in extreme temperature conditions

3) Unnecessary charge of batteries.

Though cell phone batteries are made robust enough, rough handling like dropping of batteries make a permanent damage to the batteries. Use of cell phones in extreme condition is another factor which hampers the life of a battery. If cell phones are kept under direct sun rays for prolonged period like putting them on car dash board while driving, it damages the battery. Another important damage to cell phone batteries is because of the basic human tendency of charging the battery for a prolonged period even though the batteries are fully charged.

Life of a cell phone battery depends on the charging and discharging cycles. Once you completely charge the battery and keep the charging on, the battery starts discharging to a particular level and then again starts charging. The more the cell phone battery is put on charge the more will be the cycles of charging and discharging. This will reduce the life of the cell phone battery to a great extent.

So to maximise the life of the cell phone batteries one need to avoid rough handling, extreme conditions and unnecessary charge of battery.
